This is a fantasy series written by Stephen King and there are many connections in this series to his other books. Back when Stephen King was nineteen he was inspired by Tolkien's Lord of the Rings to write a quest based fantasy novel. The Dark Tower is what came from that inspiration and is about Roland and his quest for the Dark Tower. Along the way he meets up with some very interesting and unique companions to help him with his quest. People are able to move between worlds under certain conditions and the companions are from different times in our world and they each must learn to adjust to Roland's world in order to help him with his quest. The characters are well defined in this series and the plot is quite interesting.
